Welcome and Congratulations.

I am excited for you! Welcoming a new child into the world is a thrilling and exciting experience mixed with some uncertainty.

I want to save you time. I want to save you money. I want to save you from frustration. When I went shopping before the birth of my first child
I was overwhelmed. There are so many products on the market. I was sure it didn’t need to be that difficult for first time mothers. This shopping checklist grew from my own experience, with the help of some great friends. 

This guide simplifies getting you and your home ready with the essentials: nappies, bathing, bedding, feeding, clothing and transport items. Plus you will learn what you need to take to the hospital with you.

• Work out what you really need and if on a budget what you can afford.
• Resist buying every available gadget or cute outfit and ask yourself is it really needed? Remember you will usually receive gifts from family and friends such as clothes, hats, socks and soft toys.
• Consider the quality of purchases made depending on whether you intend having more children.
• Ensure purchases comply with safety guidelines for your country and are in good working order. There are mandatory safety regulations for certain items
• such as cots, baby car seats and capsules.

I would like this checklist to:

• Be very practical so there is space for you to record notes, details, pricing etc
• Be something you take with you shopping
• Be easy to read and use
• Reduce unnecessary shopping
• Include explanations and hints which helped me

Naturally, care has been taken to provide accurate and safe information, yet I have not written this as an expert, but as a fellow mother.

This checklist is based on my personal experience. It is a starting point for you. Everyone’s experience will be different. If something worked for me and not for you, let me know. Ask other mothers you know for
advice. Together we can each help future mothers.

We can also help our partners be prepared. I have included a checklist for them on page 81 which you can remove and give them.
